I was in Oceanside for a few days as my wife's plus one at her conference. I had the morning free and drove past Anza to pick up Lookout Mountain #1 (HPS #225). This was a short, easy hike that started on the PCT at a turnout on Highway 74. There used to be several routes, but only route #3 remains available and steers clear of private land. I followed the PCT south skirting foothills for about 1.5 miles. Then, up the very good use trail that starts up a drainage. Most of the gain is on the use trail. It was steep class 1, eventually leaving the drainage to meander toward the round summit. A few cairns were helpful where it was not obvious where to continue. The summit had the standard double red cans with a couple of register books. It was warm, but I got up and down in the morning before it got too hot. The summit was surrounded by brush so the views were just fair. Still, it was a pleasant hike and enough for me to break a sweat. I was back in plenty of time for the afternoon and evening festivities.
